Chocolate Cupcakes with Espresso Buttercream Frosting

These Chocolate Cupcakes with Espresso Buttercream Frosting are soft, moist, and anything but boring. The espresso buttercream frosting is the star here, rich, creamy, and full of coffee flavor, piled on top of a tender chocolate cupcake that stays moist thanks to the sour cream.

The Best Chocolate Espresso Cupcakes

The cupcake base here is what makes these worth the extra step. Most chocolate cupcakes lean bitter or dry, but the sour cream keeps these moist and tender without making them overly sweet. The result is a chocolate cupcake that holds its own against a rich frosting instead of hiding behind it.

There is coffee in the cake itself, not enough to taste like mocha, but just enough to deepen the chocolate. The real coffee flavor lives in the frosting, where the espresso powder gives it that rich, creamy bite coffee lovers want.

If you are not a buttercream person, any frosting works here, but the espresso buttercream is honestly the whole point of this pairing.

How to Make Chocolate Cupcakes with Espresso Buttercream

  1. Start with the frosting, since it needs a few minutes to come together while the cupcakes bake and cool. Stir the espresso powder into the vanilla and let it dissolve, then cream the butter with half the powdered sugar. Beat in the vanilla and espresso mixture, add the remaining powdered sugar, then thin with milk a tablespoon at a time until it is smooth and spreadable.
  2. For the cupcakes, preheat the oven to 375°F and line two cupcake pans with 24 liners. Cream the softened butter and sugar, then beat in the eggs one at a time and add the vanilla. Stir in the salt, baking powder, and baking soda, then mix the instant coffee into the hot water and add that to the bowl along with the cocoa powder and milk.
  3. Beat until combined, then gently mix in the flour and sour cream just until it comes together. Fill the liners about halfway and bake for roughly 15 minutes, checking with a toothpick. Let the cupcakes cool completely before you frost them.

Espresso Buttercream Frosting

This frosting is creamy, rich, and packs a real coffee flavor that balances the sweetness of the powdered sugar. The espresso powder does the heavy lifting, and because it dissolves into the vanilla first, you get a smooth flavor without any gritty bits.

It pipes beautifully and holds its shape, so it works for swoops, swirls, or a simple spread. The caffeine in the espresso powder is a nice little bonus if you are having these with an afternoon coffee.

Quick Tips and Shortcuts

  • You can swap the espresso buttercream for any frosting you like. Vanilla Cinnamon Sugar Frosting and Oreo Buttercream Frosting are both favorites around here.
  • Do not overbeat the cupcake batter once the flour goes in, or the cupcakes can turn dense. Mix just until combined.
  • If you want even more coffee flavor, add an extra half teaspoon of espresso powder to the buttercream, a little goes a long way.
  • These cupcakes keep well in an airtight container for a few days, and the frosting softens slightly at room temperature, which is exactly how you want to serve them.
