These easy drop Chocolate Sugar Cookies are rolled in sugar before being baked into a soft chewy sugar cookie. The added chocolate flavor makes this a great cookie for those that love chocolate.

Ingredients in Chocolate Sugar Cookies

  • Unsalted butter
  • Semisweet chocolate chips
  • Cocoa powder
  • Granulated sugar
  • Espresso powder
  • Brown sugar
  • Egg
  • Baking powder
  • Vanilla extract
  • All-purpose flour
  • Salt

How to Make Chocolate Sugar Cookies

Preheat the oven - Preheat the oven to 375ºF and line the cookie sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.
Combine the dry ingredients - In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour with the salt and baking powder.

Melt the chocolate - Add the butter and the chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl and melt in 20-second intervals stirring after each time. Once melted, stir and add to a large bowl.

Mix the wet ingredients - Add the granulated sugar and the brown sugar to the bowl of melted chocolate and stir to combine.

Beat in the eggs and the vanilla until well combined.

Combine the wet and dry ingredients - Slowly beat the dry ingredients into melted chocolate and combine until all of the ingredients are moistened.

Roll in sugar - Roll the chocolate sugar cookie dough into 1-inch balls and then roll it into granulated sugar.

Bake - Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes and then remove them from the oven. Bake one cookie sheet at a time. Store the cookies in the fridge for up to 5 days.

How to Freeze Sugar Cookies

You can freeze these chocolate sugar cookies easily and they last 3 months frozen.

To freeze the sugar cookie dough, roll the cookie dough and coat it in granulated sugar in advance to make it easier when it is time to bake the cookies.

To freeze baked chocolate sugar cookies, place the sugar cookies in a freezer-safe bag and then store the bag in freezer-safe containers. This will keep the cookies fresh and they will last 3 months in the freezer this way.
