Baking homemade goods with or for the family is always better than ordering carryout. There's something special about preparing the dough that makes lunch or dinner extra special. It's a great way to get the family involved and to teach the children the basics of kneading and baking dough.

Making Sicilian Crust
By using a tried and true recipe for the crust and doubling the ingredients, the Sicilian crust is born for this recipe.
Making this crust is easy to prepare and uses simple ingredients. With only 6 ingredients, the dough comes together quick and easy. It only takes 10 minutes for this dough to rise and only 20-25 minutes to bake.

To make this Sicilian pizza crust, add 2 cups of flour, 2 packets of dry yeast, sugar, and the salt to a medium-size bowl.
When adding the water to the rapid-rise yeast mixture, it's important to get the temperature correct. To succeed in activating the yeast, use very warm water between the temperatures of 120°F-130°F by using a thermometer. If the water is too hot it will kill the yeast and if it is too cold the yeast will not activate.
Always check the expiration of yeast before using it in recipes because using expired yeast will cause the dough to not rise.
Add the corn oil to the water and knead the dough to combine well. Add the remainder of the dough for a small amount of time until it is well combined.
Knead the dough for a few minutes and then allow the dough to rest and rise for 10 minutes.
Preparing the Sicilian Pizza Sauce
To be efficient with time, make the sauce while waiting for the dough to rise. In the beginning stage of the rising period, it will be small.

Once the 10 minutes is up, the dough will be larger in size and ready to spread into the pizza pan. Before adding it to the pan, I like to knead it for another minute or two before spreading it out into the pizza pan.

Stretching the Sicilian Pizza Dough
This Sicilian Pizza dough is easy to stretch. I like to use a rolling pin to flatten it out a bit and then pick up one side of the dough and allow the dough to relax and stretch.
Lay the dough down on the pizza pan and repeat the process with the other sides.
Once it is large enough to fit into the pan, pinch the edges to create the "crust" of the pizza. It's also a great gauge for where to stop with sauce and toppings.

Quick & Easy Sicilian Pizza Toppings
During this time the homemade Sicilian pizza sauce will be done simmering. Carefully and evenly spread the sauce over the pizza crust, ensuring not to pour over the edges.
Sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top of the sauce, followed by the ground sausage, pepperonis, and sliced peppers.
Sprinkle additional mozzarella cheese on top of the toppings and place in the preheated oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the edges are golden brown.
