Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, cream the room-temperature butter until smooth. Add the granulated sugar and light brown sugar, then beat until creamy and well combined.
Mix in the eggs and vanilla extract. Beat until fully incorporated.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour (spooned and leveled), baking soda, and salt.
Gradually add the dry and wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. The dough may appear crumbly—this is normal.
Gently fold in the chocolate chips and M&M's.
Use your hands to combine the dough into a soft dough.
Scoop cookie dough by three tablespoonsful (or use a #20 medium cookie scoop) and place onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
Bake cookies for 9-11 minutes or until the bottoms are light golden brown. Avoid overbaking; the centers should look slightly underdone. They will continue to bake as they cool.
While the cookies are still warm, press additional chocolate chips and extra M&M candies onto the top of the cookies to make them more colorful if desired.
Allow the cookies to cool for at least 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
